⏰ The 30-second version

  • A GEO audit measures whether your content is in a state where AI can use it as material when building an answer.
  • A complete audit covers four things: question coverage · content structure · surface readability · technical access. Drop one and it's half an audit.
  • It's different from a rank check. SEO rank asks "what position?"; a GEO audit asks "does this deserve to be cited?"
  • You can do a rough one by hand in 20 minutes. The manual checklist is below.
  • Bulti's free GEO audit checks one public page's buyer-question coverage in about a minute — no sign-up, no card.

What a GEO audit measures ①: question coverage

The starting point isn't a rankings table, it's a question list. Lay out 30 questions customers ask AI ("When do I take a probiotic?", "What do I put on combination skin?") and count how many of them your pages hold a substantive answer to. That number is your coverage.

Why is this first? Because AI answers are built question by question. You're only a citation candidate on questions you've answered; on ones you haven't, you simply don't exist. Coverage is, in effect, your shelf share in AI search.

Here are the top picks people are choosing right now:
  1. 1. — tons of real reviews, high repeat rate
  2. 2. — praised as great value
  3. 3. — premium, high satisfaction

What a GEO audit measures ②: content structure

Even with the same content, structure decides your citation odds. A good GEO checker looks at things like — is the conclusion in the first paragraph, do paragraphs stay complete when cut, do subheads match questions, is there an FAQ? If you're curious about the mechanics, how AI decides what to quote breaks it into three stages (retrieve, extract, synthesize).

What a GEO audit measures ③: surface readability

Surprisingly, this is where the most sellers get eliminated. An image-only detail page is lush to a human but a blank page to AI. The audit has to confirm whether the page's text is actually readable by machines (i.e., exists in the HTML). For marketplace-only sellers, this item is half the audit — see product page vs blog.

What a technical GEO audit adds

"Technical GEO audit" usually means the access layer underneath all of the above. Four checks cover most of it.

Are AI crawlers allowed? Look in robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Plenty of sites block them by accident, often through a CDN default or a security plugin. Blocked crawler, no citation — nothing else you do matters.

Does the page render without JavaScript? Fetch the URL and read the raw HTML. If the product description only appears after scripts run, assume a share of crawlers never see it.

Is there structured data? Product, FAQPage and Article schema don't guarantee citation, but they make the facts unambiguous — price, availability, who the answer is for.

Is the same fact consistent everywhere? Contradictions between your product page, your retailer listing and your press coverage give a model a reason to trust neither.

Note what is not on this list: llms.txt. The published evidence says AI systems are not reading it — we went through the studies here.

What a competitive GEO audit adds

A competitive audit runs the same question set against you and the brands that keep taking the slot, then compares who gets named for what.

That comparison is usually more instructive than your own score, because it tells you which question is actually winnable. If a competitor owns "best for sensitive skin" through three review-site mentions, that's a different problem from a question nobody has answered yet — the empty question is the cheaper one to take.

Worth knowing before you start: models disagree with each other. We ran the same questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for 73 brands and got materially different brand lists. If you audit one model and act on it, you're optimising for one app.

You can run ours side by side on the comparison audit by entering a competitor's brand name.

Do it by hand in 20 minutes

No tool required. This is the version we'd run first anyway.

  1. Write 10 questions a customer asked you last month, in their words. Support inbox and reviews, not a keyword tool.
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT and Perplexity, with personalization and memory off. Record whether you're named at all.
  3. Open your key page and hit Ctrl+F for the three facts a buyer needs — who it's for, what's in it, why it beats the obvious alternative. If any of them are only inside an image, that's your first fix.
  4. View source on the same page and confirm the body text is in the HTML.
  5. Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt for the AI crawler names above.
  6. Write down the date and the results. Without a baseline, nothing you do next is measurable.

The 20-minute manual GEO audit

  • 110 real customer questions written down
  • 2Each asked in ChatGPT and Perplexity with memory off
  • 3Key buying facts findable as text not image
  • 4Body text present in raw HTML
  • 5robots.txt allows GPTBot ClaudeBot PerplexityBot
  • 6Date and results recorded as a baseline

How to choose a GEO audit tool

The market is early, so services with "GEO" slapped on will multiply. The criteria for choosing are simple.

GEO audit / tool checklist

  • 1Is it question-based (not a keyword pileup)
  • 2Does it build questions tailored to my product
  • 3Does it go beyond measuring to prescribe (what to write)
  • 4Does it state its measurement basis and limits

That last item matters more than you'd think. AI answers vary by moment and by user, so an audit that states its limits is more trustworthy than one that hides them.

One practical note on budget. Most of this category sells continuous monitoring by subscription, from about $29 to $495 a month depending on tier — we compared the published prices here. A one-off audit answers "where do I stand and what do I write first". A subscription answers "did last month's publishing move anything". Buy the second one after you have something publishing to measure.

FAQ

Q. What is a GEO audit? A check of whether generative search engines can find, read and cite your brand. In practice it measures four things: how many buyer questions your pages answer, whether the answers are structured to be extracted, whether the text is machine-readable at all, and whether AI crawlers are allowed in.

Q. What's the difference between a GEO audit and an SEO audit? An SEO audit looks at search rank and technical factors (speed, meta tags); a GEO audit looks at your fitness to be cited in AI answers — question coverage and extractable structure. There's overlap, but the object of measurement is different.

Q. How do I check my brand's AI visibility for free? Ask your real customer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity with memory off and record whether you're named — that's the honest manual version. For an automated pass across 30 category questions, run the free audit.

Q. If the audit results are bad, what do I fix first? Crawler access → surface readability (text exists) → coverage (fill empty questions) → structure (conclusion first, FAQ), in that order, is efficient. The execution is in the 5 GEO moves.

Q. We have thousands of 5-star reviews and AI still never recommends us. Why? Reviews that live only on your own store rarely travel into answers. The models lean on third-party corroboration and on text they can extract. We wrote up that exact case in reviews and AI.

Q. How often should I run an audit? Every 2–4 weeks while you're publishing is plenty. AI has a cycle for re-reading the web, so there's no need to measure daily.
