What kind of content does AI quote? Start with how the answer gets built
From receiving a question to assembling an answer — the three stages of retrieve, extract, synthesize. Here's the principle behind what it takes for your content to survive each stage.
⏰ The 30-second version
- An AI answer is built in three stages — retrieve (find), extract (cut), synthesize (weave).
- To survive stage one you need a text page that's retrievable; stage two pulls paragraphs that make sense when cut out; stage three pulls sentences that are the answer itself.
- Keyword repetition helps at none of the three stages. A structure that answers the question passes all three.
- Once you understand the principle, you don't have to memorize the tactics.
Stage 1 — Retrieve: no retrieval, no start
When a customer asks "When should I take a probiotic?", the AI first searches for relevant documents and gathers candidates. The first gate opens here. Image-only detail pages and login-gated pages don't make the candidate pool. The text has to physically exist in the HTML just to make the starting line.
This stage overlaps with traditional search visibility — one reason SEO doesn't become completely pointless. Being retrievable is still the ticket in.
