⏰ The short version
- Three checks: ask AI directly · look at GA4 · re-measure coverage. Use all three; one alone will mislead you.
- Citation takes time. Not appearing the day you publish is normal.
- Five common causes: not indexed · answer buried · sentences that don't stand alone · nobody asks that question · crawlers blocked.
- The most common one is the answer being buried. A long intro means AI never finds it.
- Check crawler access first — if that's broken, nothing else matters.
First: how do you even know?
Three checks. Any one of them alone will give you a wrong read.
1. Ask AI directly
Fastest. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the way a customer would phrase it.
- ❌ "What do you think of [your brand]?" — naming yourself guarantees you're discussed. Tells you nothing.
- ⭕ "Best moisturizer for oily skin?" — this is what a customer types.
Ask several times, varying the phrasing. AI answers are probabilistic. One miss is not a result.
💡 Watch out for your own account Your chat history influences answers. If you've discussed your brand before, AI remembers and is more likely to mention it. Use a fresh or logged-out session.
2. Check GA4
Citations produce clicks. Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition → search chatgpt.
Full walkthrough in how to check AI traffic in GA4.
This is the strongest evidence. Even if your manual test comes back empty, traffic in GA4 means you're being cited for phrasings you haven't tried.
3. Re-measure coverage
Compare how many questions you answer before and after publishing. Going from 0 to 3 means the direction is right — the material is in place even if AI hasn't picked it up yet.
The 5 reasons
1. It isn't indexed yet
The most common and most anticlimactic.
AI reaches your content two ways: it was in the training data, or it's retrieved live at answer time. Both need time.
- Check indexing first: search
site:yourdomain.com/your-poston Google. Nothing? Not indexed. - Request indexing in Search Console.
- New content typically takes days to weeks to surface in AI answers. Checking the same day proves nothing.
2. The answer is buried
The single most common real cause we see.
The writing is fine, but the shape is this:
Welcome back! Today we're talking about moisturizers.
There are four main skin types, and understanding them...
(five scrolls later)
...so for oily skin, go with a gel formula.
A human scrolls. AI looks near the top. An answer in paragraph six doesn't get cited.
Fix: answer the question in the first paragraph, then justify it. Conclusion first.
3. Sentences that can't stand alone
Citation happens at the sentence level. Lift the sentence out of context — does it still mean something?
- ❌ "This one is especially good for those people." — meaningless alone.
- ⭕ "Oily skin does better with a low-oil gel moisturizer." — complete by itself.
Heavy use of "this," "that," "as mentioned above" tanks your odds.
4. Nobody asks that question
The article is excellent and nobody is asking.
What a brand wants to say and what a customer wonders are different things. "Our three-stage cold extraction process" is the former. "When should I take probiotics?" is the latter.
Fix: start from real customer questions. Where to find them.
5. AI can't read your site at all
This one voids everything else, so check it first.
- Look at
robots.txtfor AI crawlers:GPTBot,PerplexityBot,ClaudeBot,Google-Extended,OAI-SearchBot. - If body content renders only via JavaScript, crawlers may see an empty page.
- Content behind a login or modal doesn't get read.
In our diagnostics a meaningful share of sites simply failed to crawl. Of 370 Korean brands attempted, only 284 completed — largely for this reason.
Work through it in this order
- Can it be crawled? (#5) — if not, stop and fix that
- Is it indexed? (#1) — if not, wait
- Is the answer near the top? (#2) — most common fix
- Do sentences stand alone? (#3)
- Does anyone ask this? (#4)
Honest footnotes
- AI output is probabilistic. The same question can name different brands each time. Don't judge on one run.
- Citation also depends on domain authority and off-site mentions. Structure isn't everything.
- The ordering above reflects what we see most often in diagnostics, not a formal study.
