AI Search Engines 2026 — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot: Which and When
What AI search engines are, the main ones, and when each is worth using. Plus the one thing every store owner has to check — does your brand come up when a customer asks?
⏰ The short version
- An AI search engine gives you an answer in sentences instead of a list of links. It reads the web for you and cites a few sources.
- The main ones: ChatGPT · Perplexity · Google AI Overview · Gemini · Microsoft Copilot.
- They differ by job: conversation and recommendations lean ChatGPT, sources you can verify lean Perplexity, and the widest reach is Google AI Overview (most people use it without realizing it's AI).
- One thing in common: they all cite only a handful of brands. If you're not in there, the customer never sees your store.
- If you own a store, today's job is one thing — open an incognito window, ask "best [your category]", and see whether your brand appears.
What an AI search engine is
Old search hands you ten links and says "pick one." AI search reads the web for you and answers in sentences, citing a few trusted sources along the way.
For the customer it's easier. Ask "best moisturizer for oily skin" and it names two or three products right away. No comparing ten tabs.
For the seller it's scary. There used to be ten slots on page one. Now there are two or three slots inside the answer.
The main AI search engines, and when to use each
1. ChatGPT
The most used. You ask conversationally; it's strong at recommendations, comparisons, and summaries. With search enabled, it reads the live web too.
- Best at: recommendations, exploratory questions, "which is better, A or B?"
- This is where customers most often narrow down a purchase.
2. Perplexity
Every answer comes with clear source links. Good for "where did this claim come from?"
- Best at: verifying sources, research
- Because sources are visible, being cited here tends to drive real click-throughs.
3. Google AI Overview
The AI summary at the top of Google results. Not a separate site — it just appears when you search Google.
- Best at: general informational questions
- The biggest reach of all, and most people don't even know it's AI.
4. Gemini
Google's assistant, wired into Search, YouTube, and Gmail. Shares roots with AI Overview.
- Best at: search and summarizing inside the Google ecosystem
5. Microsoft Copilot
Built on the same family as ChatGPT, wired into Bing and Windows.
- Best at: answers for Windows and Microsoft-ecosystem users
Which matters most — the answer is "where your customer asks"
Comparing specs is beside the point. What matters is where your customer asks.
- Consumer product recommendations → ChatGPT leads
- General informational queries → Google AI Overview
- Research and source-checking → Perplexity

If you own a store: a 5-minute job today
More important than using these engines is checking whether your brand shows up in them.
- Open an incognito window (logged in, your own brand history skews the answer).
- Ask the way a customer would —
"best [your category]". Don't include your brand name. - Is your brand in the answer? If not, customers can't see your store right now.
We ran this on 20 indie US brands and 18 of them came up in none of the questions. Most had no idea there was a problem.
If you're not there, it's fixable → the formula for content AI cites.

FAQ
Q. How many AI search engines are there? The main ones are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. ChatGPT and Google AI Overview have the largest usage.
Q. Which AI search engine is best? It depends on the job. ChatGPT for recommendations and conversation, Perplexity for source-checking, Google AI Overview for reach. For a brand, what matters isn't "the best engine" but "the engine your customers use."
Q. How is AI search different from regular search? Regular search gives a list of links and lets you choose. AI search reads the web for you and answers in sentences, citing only a few sources — so there are far fewer slots to appear in.
Q. How do I get my brand to show up in AI search? Find the questions customers actually ask, then write clear answers to them in a structure AI can read. That work is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).
The honest footnotes
- Usage and strengths of AI search engines shift constantly. The above reflects general trends as of 2026.
- AI answers are probabilistic — the same question can surface different brands and sources each time.
- There is no absolute "best." The answer changes with your category and your audience.
